Meet The Sanctuary Horses

Sanctuary Horse
Jewels
Jewels is a 23 year old grey mare. Jewels was my first personal horse that I got when I was 7 years old. She was only 4 days old when her dam passed away, so I bottle raised her, she started my true passion for horses, especially the seniors. She is fully retired due to arthritis in her front knees. She is on daily equinox and du hou to keep her comfortable and gets acupuncture from our wonderful veterinarian. She is also on a special diet now as she ages. She gets ground flax, purine amplify, chia, mineral oil and 6 pounds of triple crown senior daily.

Sanctuary Horse
Chip
Chip is a 20yr old gelding that we got 4 years ago when he was going to be euthanized for aggressive behavior. We found that he had been locked in a stall for 4 years which takes a toll on mental health. He was loaded with sand as well so we sand purged him and then treated for ulcers. Last year he was also diagnosed with minor kissing spine which we have been managing with injections but we are also looking into surgery for this guy to keep him as comfortable as possible.

Sanctuary Horse
Charlie
Charlie is a 23 year old bay paint gelding. We got Charlie when he was only 2 years old and had never been handled. He tends to be a little shy, and always has been but he is a gentle giant at 17.2hh. He has back issues that have retired him but he gets regular acupuncture and chiropractic to keep him feeling his best.

Sanctuary Horse
Angel
Angel is a 20 year old black mare. We got her after she started acting aggressive towards her owner, which was very out of character for her. For a horse to change temperaments like that, typically there is a reason. After having her vet checked we found that she had torn a tendon that was not treated properly and she had scar tissue. We now have her on corrective wedge shoes and daily equioxx to keep her comfortable. She also has cushings and hypothyroid so she is on prascend and thyro-l with alow starch diet.

Sanctuary Horse
Cisco
Cisco is a 10 year old buckskin gelding. We purchased him last year to be a lesson horse but shortly after getting him and getting his teeth floated, and weight up to a healthy state, we noticed that he was not moving correctly. I contacted his 2nd owner listed on his papers and at that time we found out we are his 10th home and he has hospitalized 4 people. He has the sweetest temperament and is the horse my daughter leads around and puts bows in his hair. He has some lameness issues in his hind left leg that his x rays came back clear so we will be proceeding with ultrasounds to see if we can find something soft tissue. If we are not able to find a cause or it is something that we are not able to correct then we will enjoy retirement with us for the remainder of his life!

Sanctuary Horse
Mystique
Mystique is roughly 2-3 year old smoky black mare. She came to me as a foster for another rescue after being seized from an unfortunate situation. She was very emaciated, completely unhandled and had miscarried her foal. She has since gained a significant amount of weight and is learning to trust people. She can still be leery with new people but we are giving her time to warm up. Once she trusts people more and gets comfortable we will start her training to see what her next steps will be, but either way she will be staying with us.

Sanctuary Horse
Sami
Sami is a roughly 16-18 year old bay roan mare. She came as a foster that was also seized with Mystique. She had a foal that is now weaned and she is currently pregnant. She has come a long ways and starting to trust people. She is a super sweet girl and is the first to run up and say hello and LOVES food. She gained a significant amount of weight while at Safe Landing and learned to trust people. We plan to keep her after she foals and add her to our sanctuary program. With her age and years of being used as a broodmare, this girl deserves a good life of love and retirement being spoiled.

Sanctuary Horse
Brandi
Brandi is an 8-10 year old bay mare. She was a surrender to a local rescue after being used primarily as a broodmare. She was started under saddle but was found to be unsafe after bucking multiple riders off. We will be having her seen by our veterinarian to run some test, x rays and ultrasounds to see if we can find a reason behind her behavior. She is a very sweet girl that is extremely social, easy to catch and enjoys being loved on, so she will stay
with us long term no matter what the results are!

Sanctuary Horse
Ranger
-Ranger is our oldest sanctuary horse. He is a 28-30yr old gelding that was sold at an auction very underweight and was purchased by a friend. They have already put a significant amount of weight on him before he came to use for retirement. He is continuing to gain weight and enjoying the other senior horses and open pastures. He is a super sweet boy that the kids love to brush and spoil and the perfect horse for those to learn how to lead, groom and pick their feet.

Sanctuary Horse
Blaze
-Blaze is our newest sanctuary horse. He is an 8 year old gelding that was severely underweight but has gained a significant amount of weight in only a month of being with us. He does have some neurological issues that cause him to not be sound which is why he came to our sanctuary. We have taken x-rays and are waiting on lab work results to see if we can find some answers as to what is contributing to this.

Sanctuary Horse
Athena
-Athena also just joined us 10/2024. She had severely neglected hooves that had not been properly maintained in years. We cut almost 7lbs of hoof off of her pour little feet, which we had to x-ray. It will takes months to a year to correct the damage that was done to her feet. We had her teeth floated, she is in cloud boots and is on a every 2 week trimming schedule! She is estimated to be about 18 years old.
